THE GRAMMY distinction between tradtional and contemporary blues is confusing this year. Buddy Guy (74) is contemporary while Charlie Musslewhite (67) is traditional. Also shortlisted in traditonal are Cyndi Lauper and Jimmy Vaughan, while Bettye LaVette, Dr. John and Solomon Burke are contemporary. Meanwhile, young talents like Mike Zito, Ana Popovich and Ruthie Foster go unrecognized.
Nonetheless, my picks from the Grammy lists are Guy’s Living Proof (featured here previously) and Musslewhite’s The Well (playlist above), a simply fabulous, warm and engaging album that doesn’t sound one bit old-fashioned or dated.
