Gregg Allman enlisting T-Bone Burnett and Dr. John for an album of blues standards sounds dangerously like yet another of those end-of-career vanity records so popular these days. It’s not.

Egos were checked at the studio door to make music and the result is a well-crafted blues album, start to finish, full stop. You don’t listen with affection for the backstory, you listen because you love good blues. I put it in rotation with last year’s best blues albums and it still stands out. Buy it.

* It’s superfluous to review Adele‘s 21 when everyone + dog will. Good to see her getting her due, though; her 19 got a bit lost in the noise of Duffy and others.
