WHEN PATRICK Sweany tells an interviewer ”I am among the most skilled, educated and professional musicians in the world”, he means the people in Nashville he worked with on That Old Southern Drag. But he could well mean himself. His new album, his fifth, is southern soul with roots in the soil that showcases both his passion for music and his articulate ways.

Sweany and Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach were long-time collaborators in their native Ohio, and both have moved their bands to Nashville and produced their best work yet; the Keys’ Grammy-winning Brothers last year, and Sweany’s Southern Drag this year.

* For UK trivia buffs, Sweany’s mum is from Liverpool.
