The Lorraine Motel in Memphis as I found it on an early spring day 5 years ago. It looks as it did the day Martin Luther King Jr was shot there, April 4, 1968, but is now officially part of the National Civil Rights Museum to its right.

Jacqueline Smith, above, the last resident of the Lorraine, sat in protest of ”the commercialisation” of King’s name for over 20 years.

Other than the museum, the neighborhood remains lower income and mostly black.
